This year’s Field Museum Women in Science event opened with an interactive networking session that included over 30 young women from Chicago Public Schools, the keynote speaker Dr. Amal Alachkar, members of the Chicago Sky WNBA team and other professional women from the Chicagoland area. The networking program provided a forum for the students to ask questions about career paths, job opportunities and many other topics.
Following the networking program, Dr. Alachkar, a Syrian neuroscientist and pharmacologist delivered a powerful speech addressing the impact of trauma and environmental conditions to our mental health. She explained how the Syrian war and the resulting tragedy shaped her career and research; how she “couldn’t see the light in the darkness,” but found the light at the end of the tunnel through her research and becoming a tenured professor at the University of California Irvine.
Joining Magellan Corporation for this educational event were members of the Chicago Sky and Chicago Red Stars organizations.
