Sky High Hoops

Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago named Magellan / Chicago Sky Marquis Charity Partner

For the second year in a row, Magellan and the Chicago Sky have named Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago as their Marquis Charity—a partnership that brings well-earned visibility and memorable experiences to this outstanding nonprofit. As part of the collaboration, the Sky hosted a high-energy basketball clinic on Friday, February 28, 2025, at BGCC’s James R. Jordan Club, where about 60 kids got the chance to train and connect with Sky guard Rachel Banham and assistant coach Awvee Storey.

Banham and Storey worked directly with the kids, guiding them through basketball drills, skill-building exercises, and team challenges. Banham, a standout guard with a rich history in women’s basketball, emphasized leadership, precision, and confidence on the court while helping the kids improve their shooting form and decision-making skills. Awvee Storey, the Sky’s assistant coach and former NBA player, brought his wealth of experience from both his playing days and coaching career. A ten-year veteran of the NBA and WNBA, Storey's hands-on coaching style and deep understanding of the game created an inspiring atmosphere where every player felt supported and motivated.

The BGCC has long been a beacon of support for youth in Chicago, offering safe spaces, strong mentors, and enriching programs to thousands of children and teens each year. Magellan’s partnership with the Sky ensures that the Club—and the young people it serves—stay at the center of experiences that uplift, inspire, and empower. Magellan is proud to stand alongside the Chicago Sky and BGCC in making moments like this happen.

KICKING OFF 2025 CHICAGO FIRE SEASON

Luncheon supports youth development through soccer

BIG FUN TODAY!! Magellan Corporation was proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Chicago Fire FC’s 2025 Season Kickoff Luncheon, held on Tuesday, February 18, at the Swissôtel Chicago. This annual event brings together fans, players, and coaches to celebrate the start of a new season—all while raising funds for an incredible community initiative.

This year’s luncheon was a record-breaker, with over 700 attendees and an incredible $280,000 raised in support of the Fire’s P.L.A.Y.S. (Participate, Learn, Achieve, Youth, Soccer) Program. This initiative goes beyond the game, using soccer to help underserved youth in Chicago develop key life skills and boost academic achievement. Seeing the community rally behind this program was inspiring, and we were thrilled to play a part in its success. Huge shout out to our friend Jessica Yavitz, who heads the Fire Foundation, for the overwhelming success of the day!

Magellan hosted two tables of clients and friends at the event, with some extra-special guests joining us—midfielder Kellyn Acosta and goalkeeping coach Zach Thornton. Their insights into the season ahead and stories from the pitch made for a lively and memorable afternoon.

As a proud partner of Chicago Fire FC, our Magellan logo will be prominently featured on the team’s sleeves this season, a symbol of our ongoing commitment to both the club and the community. With the Fire kicking off their season on February 22 against Columbus Crew, we can’t wait to see them in action and cheer them on to victory.

Here’s to an exciting season ahead—let’s go, Fire! 🔥⚽

Chicago Sky’s Tyler Marsh Touches Down at Magellan

No bigger fans of the Chicago Sky than Magellan Corporation!

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Magellan Corporation had the distinct pleasure of hosting Tyler Marsh, the newly appointed head coach of the Chicago Sky. Accompanying him were our dear friends, the team CEO Adam Fox, General Manager Jeff Pagliocca, and VP of Sponsorships Alex Teodosi.

Coach Marsh engaged warmly with our staff, posing for photos and inquiring about Magellan's operations. The tour showcased our office's support for the Chicago Sky, with jerseys and memorabilia adorning the walls—a testament to our commitment to this decade-long partnership.

Coach Marsh brings a wealth of experience to the Sky. In the NBA, Marsh served as a player development coach for the Toronto Raptors, playing a part in their 2019 NBA Championship. He also held positions with the Indiana Pacers before joining the Las Vegas Aces as an assistant coach in 2022, where he contributed to two WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023. His extensive background positions him to make a significant impact on the Sky's performance in the upcoming season.

The WNBA experienced a historic surge in popularity last year, with record-breaking attendance and viewership. The league posted its highest attendance in 22 years, with a total of 2.3 million fans attending games in 2024, marking a 48% increase from the previous season. Magellan is proud to have been a sponsor for over a decade, supporting women's basketball long before its recent surge in mainstream recognition, a testament to supporting women-forward initiatives, including athletics.

Magellan looks forward to the 2025 season -- we'll be cheering loudest.

Visit with Luol Deng a slam dunk

Fresh from South Sudan, Deng connected with our team

Magellan Corporation had the pleasure of welcoming former Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng to our Chicago office this week. Deng, known not only for his standout NBA career but also for his significant charitable efforts, brought an air of excitement and inspiration to the team, with staff eager to mug for the camera with the 6' 9" baller.

Deng is a genuinely nice guy, and spent time meeting our people, signing autographs, and taking pics, leaving everyone impressed by his warmth and ability to connect. He even learned a little bit about how Magellan works, where our steel comes from, how it is used eventually, and the many faceted process of getting it from mill to customer.

Recently, Deng returned from South Sudan, where he has been deeply involved in mission-driven work aimed at supporting the country’s development. As president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, Deng has been instrumental in building opportunities for young athletes and developing sports infrastructure. His efforts helped South Sudan’s national basketball team make their Olympic debut in 2024, a milestone he personally supported by covering many of the associated expenses.

While his visit to Magellan didn’t include formal presentations or discussions about his work, it was clear that Deng’s dedication to making a difference extends far beyond the basketball court. His ability to balance his commitments and still take time to connect with communities everywhere is truly admirable.

We are grateful to Luol Deng for spending time with us and for the inspiring example he sets through his actions both on and off the court.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

Derrick Rose Night: Celebrating a Chicago Legend

On January 4, 2025, the United Center became the gathering spot for Chicago to celebrate Derrick Rose, one of its most beloved athletes. The Bulls hosted an evening dedicated to Rose’s incredible NBA career, and Magellan Corporation was proud to sponsor. We invited a couple dozen of our valued partners and staff to join us for a night filled with basketball, memories, and a little magic.

From his early days at Simeon Career Academy to becoming the youngest MVP in NBA history, Rose’s journey has been a source of pride for Chicagoans. The halftime tribute highlighted his contributions to the Bulls and the city, culminating in the announcement that his No. 1 jersey will soon hang in the rafters—a moment that brought cheers and a few tears.

Magellan’s guests enjoyed a special reception, premium seating and access to the United Center’s VIP amenities, immersing themselves in the excitement of the event. The atmosphere was vibrant, with fans celebrating Rose’s impact both on and off the court. It was a special opportunity to come together and share in a uniquely Chicago experience.

At Magellan, we believe in building connections through meaningful moments. Sponsoring Derrick Rose Night allowed us to offer our partners and friends an evening they won’t soon forget. It’s our way of showing appreciation and sharing in the events that bring our community together.

As the night wrapped up with a Bulls win, it was clear that Derrick Rose’s legacy—and the memories of this celebration—will continue to inspire.

A look back at 2024

With best wishes to our friends for 2025

Reminisce with us ....

As the year winds down, we’re taking a moment to reflect—and we’d love for you to join us. At Magellan Corporation, 2024 was about strengthening relationships, showing up for our community, and supporting the incredible people who make our company thrive.

Our clients remain at the heart of everything we do. This year, as always, we focused on being there for them in every way, from solving challenges to celebrating successes. Whether it was brainstorming creative solutions or rolling up our sleeves together, we took pride in being the trusted partner they could count on.

We also found joy in making a difference beyond the workplace. In 2024, we celebrated the legendary Mavis Staples at the Auditorium Theatre, honoring her enduring legacy with music and heartfelt gratitude. We took over Halas Hall for an evening of football drills, autographs, and family fun with former Chicago Bears players—though some of us realized our athletic skills might need a little polish. At the same time, we stayed dedicated to giving back, whether through our partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, our friends at Connections for the Homeless, Old Town School of Folk Music, or supporting the World War II Foundation, as well as many other excellent nonprofits.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the amazing people on our team. This year, we celebrated milestones, invested in growth, and strengthened our bond as colleagues and friends. Whether it was during everyday moments or special events, 2024 reminded us how much we value each other and how vital it is to build a culture where everyone feels empowered and appreciated.

As we look to 2025, we’re filled with gratitude for the relationships we’ve built and excitement for the possibilities ahead. Thank you for being part of our journey—whether as a client, partner, or member of the Magellan Family. Together, we’re ready for whatever comes next, confident that with collaboration and care, great things lie ahead.

Kicking Off Inspiration with Coach Gregg Berhalter

Magellan meets Chicago Fire FC’s new head coach at a lively Lunch & Learn

On Thursday, December 19, 2024, our Lunch & Learn series brought some major star power to our offices. About 50 Magellan employees, customers and friends gathered for an exciting session with Gregg Berhalter, the new Head Coach and Director of Football for Chicago Fire FC. Coach Berhalter, known for his leadership and deep understanding of the game, shared his vision for the Fire and his plans to elevate the team in the seasons ahead.

As a proud sponsor of Chicago Fire FC, with our logo featured prominently on the team’s uniform sleeves, Magellan has a strong connection to the organization’s journey. This Lunch & Learn was a fantastic way to celebrate that partnership while giving employees a chance to connect with one of soccer’s top minds.

The event included a lively Q&A session with Coach Berhalter’s thoughtful responses giving everyone a glimpse into his approach to building a winning culture both on and off the field.

After the Q&A, attendees had the chance to meet Coach one-on-one for autographs and photos.

Of course, no Magellan event is complete without great eatsn, this time a delicious Italian buffet from Francesca's.

Our partnership with Chicago Fire FC is about more than just soccer—it’s about teamwork, community, and striving for excellence. This Lunch & Learn brought those values to life and set the stage for an exciting year ahead for both Magellan and the Fire.

Honoring Musical Legend and Civil Rights Icon

Happy Birthday, Queen Mavis

On December 6, 2024, the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago hosted a remarkable celebration for Mavis Staples’ 85th birthday. The event, sponsored by Magellan, brought together employees, friends, and music lovers to honor an artist whose voice and influence have shaped American culture. With nearly 50 members of the Magellan community in attendance, the night was a tribute to the enduring impact of Staples’ career.

Staples began her journey as part of The Staple Singers, a family group that became a key force in gospel and soul music. Songs like "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself" not only dominated the airwaves but also provided a soundtrack to the civil rights movement. Performing at rallies and events alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Staple Singers used their talent to inspire change and solidarity.

As a solo performer, Staples continued to break boundaries, collaborating with artists across genres to address social issues and elevate powerful messages. Her voice, filled with depth and authenticity, has touched hearts and motivated action for decades.

The evening began with a heartfelt performance by Margo Price, followed by Jackson Browne, who delivered a masterful set that included a duet with Staples on the timeless classic "The Weight." When Staples took the stage, the energy in the room shifted as she performed songs like "Freedom Highway," an anthem tied to the Selma to Montgomery marches. Staples' set list included 14 songs (including a Talking Heads cover), before an amazing encore of "I'll Take You There." Her presence was commanding, her music both a celebration and a call to reflection.

For those who attended, including Magellan employees and their guests, the concert was more than entertainment. It was a chance to witness a living legend and honor her contributions to music and social justice. Mavis Staples continues to inspire, and this celebration affirmed her place as a cornerstone of American music and history.

The great Team Magellan Hones Skills at Halas Hall

Fun on the Gridiron

Magellan Corporation brought the thrill of football to life on December 5, 2024, with a special Skills & Drills event at Halas Hall, the legendary home of the Chicago Bears. Employees, their families, and friends—50 in total—enjoyed a night filled with sports, fun, and behind-the-scenes access to the Bears’ HQ.

The event featured football drills and skill stations led by former Bears wide receiver Anthony Morgan and fullback Jason McKie. Morgan, known for his speed and determination during his time with the Bears from 1991 to 1993, inspired participants with his enthusiasm and tips. McKie, who played for the Bears from 2003 to 2009 and now serves as the team’s radio sideline reporter, brought his expertise and charisma to the field. Both players made the evening extra special by signing autographs and taking photos with attendees.

Kids of all ages had a blast tackling drills and testing their football skills, with lots of grins as they ran through agility courses and perfected their passes. Parents joined in the action too, cheering the little stinkers on and taking part in some of the drills themselves.

After the activities, guests were treated to a guided tour of Halas Hall, including exclusive insights into the team’s state-of-the-art facilities. The evening concluded with a tasty dinner in the PNC Center, where attendees bonded over delicious food while watching the live broadcast of the Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions Thursday Night Football game.

The Skills & Drills event showcased Magellan's commitment to bringing its team together through unique and memorable experiences. From kids enjoying their moment on the field to employees and friends connecting over a shared love of football, the evening left everyone with smiles and stories to share.

Dad’s Secret War: France 1944

Magellan was honored to serve as the Presenting Sponsor for The World War II Foundation’s Gala, on November 14, 2024, at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C. The event featured the premiere of Dad’s Secret War: France 1944, a powerful documentary chronicling the covert missions of the American OSS and British SOE during World War II. The gala paid tribute to World War II veterans, Holocaust survivors, and the enduring legacy of the Greatest Generation, underscoring the importance of preserving these vital stories.

The event also included moving tributes to five World War II veterans and six Holocaust survivors, featuring presentations of flags flown over Omaha Beach and handmade shadow boxes honoring their service. Attendees were captivated by Dad’s Secret War: France 1944, narrated by Kevin Bacon, which brought to life the courage and ingenuity of the unsung heroes of the Allied effort.

A tuneful lunch with a Chicago legend

WXRT's own Terri Hemmert headlined a Lunch & Learn

Magellan was thrilled to host WXRT Chicago's own Terri Hemmert, who headlined a Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, November 12 at our offices. A true radio legend, we appreciated learning a bit of the trailblazing accomplishments of Terri, cornerstone of Chicago’s airwaves.

This year, Terri marked her 50th anniversary with WXRT. Known for her groundbreaking role as Chicago’s first female morning-drive host in 1981, Terri’s influence extends far beyond radio. For decades, she has hosted Breakfast with the Beatles and inspired thousands through her teaching at Columbia College, where she shares the history of rock with future generations. Terri’s impact on the community is just as profound through her work on social justice initiatives. A true icon, she was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2010.

She wove together her encyclopedic knowledge of music with personal stories of her interactions with some of the greats. From Mavis Staples to Sir Paul McCartney, Terri has met and befriended countless artists who shaped the landscape of rock, jazz, soul, alternative and more. After her talk, Magellan team and guests enjoyed a Greek feast, while Terri spun records and regaled us with more storytelling. It was an honor to host Terri and her colleagues from Audacy on this memorable afternoon.

AN EVENING AT HALAS HALL

Servicemen and Women Enjoy Live Radio Show

Magellan is proud to support our servicemen and women all year round.

On Thursday, November 7, Magellan hosted 50 service members and their families from Great Lakes Naval Base to a day at Halas Hall.  Guests were there for the live airing of Chicago Bears Weekly Live Radio Show, featuring ESPN 1000 play-by-play announcer Jeff Joniak and 1985 Bears alum and ESPN 1000 color commentator Tom Thayer, with special guest current Bears Safety Kevin  Byard III.

The three gave insights into the successes and failures of the team on the gridiron and what the rest of the season might look like.

Organized through the Navy’s department of Moral, Welfare and Recreation, guests and family members from Great Lakes enjoyed a terrific dinner spread, drinks, were invited to grab some autographs during commercial breaks and (always!) left with some swag from their favorite monsters of the midway.

We are also committed to hiring veterans, and four fabulous members of our staff contribute immeasurably to Magellan's success. David Twiford, Matthew Bell, Larry Norwood and Adam Shaw,  thank you for your service -- we are grateful!
